Hanoi People’s Committee on Friday began construction of a $55-million project providing better accessibility to the Nhon-Hanoi Station metro line.

The infrastructure improvement project is part of a bigger scheme for the sustainable enhancement of urban transport along the Nhon-Hanoi Station metro line, whose main investor is the Transportation Works Construction Investment Project Management Authority.

The project would entail the construction of transition points at two stations in Cau Giay and Ngoc Khanh, as well as improving sidewalks, roads, lighting systems and parking spaces, and traffic organization from the metro's first station to its sixth (Nhon to Xuan Thuy).

The main investor would also introduce certain public transport solutions, like a trial for low-emission and electric buses, the usage of intelligent transportation systems and the construction of maintenance service systems, depots and public parking lots.

To encourage people to use public transport and reduce emissions, the investor also wants to introduce support policies so people could access urban metro lines more easily.

The project for the sustainable enhancement of urban transport along the Nhon-Hanoi Station metro line is funded with Hanoi’s budget and ODA from the Environment Fund managed by the Asia Development Bank. It is expected to be completed by 2025.

The Nhon-Hanoi Station metro line spans 12.5 kilometers, with an 8.5-kilometer elevated and four-kilometer underground section. When it enters operation, it would run at 35 kph with eight trains available. One more train would be reserved for peak hours, while another would be used for rescue purposes.

The line is now 75% complete and the elevated section, 96.3%. The elevated section is expected to enter operation at the end of this year, while the entire line would operate in 2027.
