Ha Tinh is proposing a VND1.5 trillion ($65 million) upgrade for a National Highway 1 section to improve traffic safety and promote economic development.

The provincial People’s Committee said Thursday a 26 km section from Hung Tri Ward to Ky Nam Commune, running through the Vung Ang economic zone in Ky Anh Town, needs to have its cracks, potholes and other damaged parts fixed. Once the central government approves the upgrade, Ha Tinh would determine a timeline for the project, the committee said.

The National Highway 1 section running through the Vung Ang economic zone is a vital traffic route with high vehicle density, leading to frequent overcrowding and traffic jams. It is also the shortest route from Vietnamese ports to central Laos and northeastern Thailand regions.

Vung Ang economic zone, spanning over 22,000 ha, was established in 2006. It hosts dozens of projects from multiple industries, which are worth hundreds of trillions of VND. Some major projects include the Formosa Ha Tinh Steel Corporation under Taiwanese conglomerate Formosa Plastics Group and the Vung Ang Thermal Power Plant.
