An 84-year-old German traveler was found dead inside his Phuket hotel room over the weekend after friends and staff were unable to reach him, with police saying the door was locked from the inside.

Officers were called to a hotel near Kamala Beach around 7 p.m. on Nov. 30, where they entered the locked room through the balcony, Khaosod reported.

The man, identified as Lothar from Germany, was discovered kneeling at the foot of his bed with his head and hands resting on the mattress. Police said he had likely been dead for several hours and noted no signs of a struggle or forced entry.

Medication for cholesterol and high blood pressure was found in the room, Mothership reported.

A housekeeper said she had knocked on the door in the morning but received no response. Later that evening, a foreign friend alerted the hotel after being unable to reach the man by phone. Staff attempted to open the door but were blocked by the interior chain, prompting the housekeeper to climb down from the fourth-floor fire escape to check the room through the balcony.

An autopsy was carried out, and authorities have notified the German Embassy to contact his relatives.
