German ambassador to Vietnam Guido Hildner visited Dong Xuan Market in Hanoi on Wednesday to observe its new solar power project in action.

The generation of solar power at the market is the result of collaboration between Hanoi's Hoan Kiem District authorities and authorities from the Berlin borough of Lichtenberg.

The project was sponsored by the German government, according to the German Embassy in Hanoi.

Solar devices were installed on the market's roof by biotechnology company BayWa r.e., which specializes in expanding sustainable energy sources in developing countries like Vietnam.

In its first phase, the new solar panels are now supplying 25% of Dong Xuan's energy, the embassy said.

Hoan Kiem and Lichtenberg authorities signed a sustainable urban development contract in 2020. The goal was to increase energy security by using solar energy devices and reducing carbon emissions, Vietnam Times reported.

The project’s main component is the installation of 470 solar panels at the market to produce a total power capacity of 155 kWh, according to the report.
