Two brothers in the central province of Nghe An saved the lives of four tourists swept away at sea Sunday.

Dau Khac Binh, 36, and Dau Minh Yen, 38, both fishermen, were throwing nets about 50 m off Cua Lo Beach at around 5:15 a.m. when they saw four men waving for help at sea.

The brothers then made their way to the men by boat. They tossed their nets to three of the distressed who were able to grab hold for safety.

They then called other fishermen at shore for help bringing the men to safety.

The fourth person, located about 10 m away, was sinking out of exhaustion. Binh and his brother then approached the man by boat and were able to haul him out of the water.

"The rescue of the four tourists took about 6 minutes, then we hurried back to the shore to provide first-aid," Binh said.

All four tourists were later hospitalized, and were discharged the same day after their health had been stabilized. They went home in fine condition.

The tourists, aged 49-56, came from Hung Yen Province which is 250 km north of Cua Lo beach on Saturday. They were swimming at the beach Sunday morning and were carried away far from shore by strong currents.

"We were running out of stamina at the time. If not for the two fishermen who came to the rescue, we could not have survived. It’s like they gave us our second lives," one of the tourists said.

Nguyen Hoang Thanh, chairman of the Nghi Huong Ward People’s Committee, said authorities had met with the two brothers on Sunday to commend their heroic acts.
