Kin Moy, a diplomat of Hong Kong descent, has been nominated by U.S. President Joe Biden to become the new ambassador to Vietnam.

The nomination, as announced by the White House on June 5, will be considered by the U.S. Senate. If it is approved, Moy, 58, will become the first U.S. ambassador to Vietnam of Asian descent, replacing his predecessor Marc Knapper.

Knapper officially became the U.S. ambassador to Vietnam on Dec. 18, 2021, eight months following his nomination by Biden.

Moy was born in 1966 in Hong Kong. He began working at the U.S. Department of State in 1992, and was considered to be among those who implemented the American pivot to Asia policy, outlined under the administration of former U.S. President Barrack Obama.

Previously, he used to work at the U.S. embassies in Beijing and Seoul, as well as the U.S. consulate in Busan.
