Social media giant Facebook has test launched in Vietnam a feature that enables users to connect with new, like-minded people.

The "Meet New Friends" feature will allow Facebook users to connect with other users having the same hobbies or from the same school or workplace, among others. Initially, users can only communicate through texts, not images or links.

"Meet New Friends" will prioritize connecting users who do not have mutual friends, but this prioritization can be disabled at will.

Earlier Facebook had announced to launch the feature at 11 p.m. March 23 on Android and iOS platforms, but it has only been widely available since Thursday.

Colombia and Vietnam are the first two markets where the feature has been test launched, according to Facebook.

The number of Facebook users in Vietnam is the seventh highest in the world, with over 58 million people as of last year, an increase of 16 percent over 2017, according to a report by social media marketing and advertising agency We Are Social.

It also said that Vietnamese are online seven hours a day and spend a daily average of 2.5 hours on social networks. Facebook and Google's YouTube are the most accessed sites with user ratios of 61 percent and 59 percent, respectively.
