"Yagi" has been taken off the international name list for storms following its catastrophic impact on Vietnam, where it caused 318 deaths, left 26 people missing and resulted in economic losses of around VND84 trillion ($3.29 billion).

The Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecast under the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment announced on Tuesday that the Typhoon Committee decided to remove "Yagi" because of its severe effects. The committee also removed "Trami" for its devastating impact on the Philippines.

Under Typhoon Committee rules, member states each contribute 10 names to a collective list used for naming new storms. Any member can request that a particularly destructive storm's name be retired. Vietnam previously proposed changing the names Linfa in 2020, Saola in 2023, and Saomai in 2018 for their heavy damage.

Named by Japan, the storm "Yagi" entered the South China Sea on Sept. 1 last year. It was labeled the strongest typhoon in the region over the past 30 years, affecting tens of millions of people in northern and central Vietnam during its 12-hour presence on land.

Yagi made landfall in Quang Ninh Province on Sept. 7, bringing powerful gales that blew off roofs and snapped trees in several northern areas, including Hanoi. Over the next five days, torrential rain, reaching up to 550 millimeters, triggered landslides and floods, killing 318 people and leaving 26 missing. Lao Cai Province was hit hardest, with 132 deaths and 19 missing.

The total economic toll from the storm was nearly VND84 trillion, equivalent to 0.62% of Vietnam’s GDP in 2023.

Storm Trami, named by Vietnam, hit the Philippines in Oct. 24 last year, killed at least 110 people and forced over 500,000 to flee their homes, the AFP reported.
