Four-wheeled vehicles that transport people or goods, with either imported or domestically manufactured motors, must have no emissions starting 2026, according to a decision by Vietnam's Prime Minister.

The decision will make the no-emission requirement be applied in Vietnam starting 2026 for certain vehicles, including the aforementioned vehicles and three-wheeled vehicles that are either newly imported or domestically manufactured.

While several people were concerned that ordinary cars would be affected by the decision, the Ministry of Transport said "four-wheeled vehicles with motors" are not the cars people think about.

Specifically, four-wheeled vehicles with motors are defined as land vehicles running on motors, designed to transport people, have two axis and at least four wheels. These vehicles have a maximum designed speed at no more than 30 kph, and have no more than 15 seats.

As such, the vehicles impacted by the decision would be the vehicles typically used in resorts, golf courses and tourism sites. Most of these vehicles now run on electricity or gas to save costs.

Vehicles with motors that transport goods are those that run on motors, have two axis and four wheels. They must not weigh more than 550 kg.
