Eight districts in the capital recorded rainfall exceeding 100 millimeters, with Dong Anh District experiencing a peak of 229 millimeters, according to the Hanoi Sewerage and Drainage Company.
The torrential rain compounded existing waterlogged conditions in the city's lake and river systems, which were still recovering from the aftermath of typhoon Yagi. Streets were submerged under 20-50 centimeters of water.
A one-kilometer stretch of Nguyen Trai Street was among the most affected areas, with rainwater flooding alleys and entering homes. The morning rush hour saw widespread vehicle immobilization, resulting in severe traffic congestion.
By 6:30 a.m., the Hanoi drainage company reported over 40 flooded spots across the city, including major streets such as Thai Ha, Vuong Thuy Vu, Nguyen Tuan, Nguyen Khuyen, and Thuy Khue. The company has been deploying floodgates, pumps, and clearing drains of debris to manage the water levels.
The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting warned that downpours are expected to continue through Tuesday night in Hanoi and several other northern provinces.
