The cold will impact the eastern parts of northern Vietnam first before affecting the Red River Delta and the western region, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.
U.S. weather forecast service AccuWeather anticipated Hanoi's temperatures to gradually fall towards the weekends, from 20-25 degrees to 14-17 degrees by Saturday. High-altitude locations like Lao Cai's Sa Pa will record nighttime temperatures at 5 degrees, and 9-10 degrees during the day.
The cold will also impact central Vietnam regions, with temperatures in the northern parts falling down to 11-17 degrees starting Thursday night.
Nguyen Van Huong, head of the weather forecast department at the center, said more cold air would come and keeping temperatures low in the north.
"The cold will affect people's health. Crops and animals will also be impacted. People should have measures to keep cattle, poultry and crops warm," Huong said.
Due to the cold air and wind patterns, areas from Da Nang to Ninh Thuan in central Vietnam will record rainfall between 30-100 mm from Tuesday afternoon to Wednesday morning. From Wednesday to Thursday, areas from Thua Thien-Hue to Khanh Hoa will record rainfall between 50-200 mm.
Rains will persist in central Vietnam on Friday, with 50-200 mm dumped onto the area. Meteorological agencies warn of flooding and erosion risks due to rainfall.
Last month, four cold waves were recorded in Vietnam, with temperatures plunging down as low as 7 degrees in certain northern areas. More cold waves will be expected this month.
