Prolonged heavy rain caused deep flooding across several roads in the center of Dong Nai Province that borders Ho Chi Minh City on Monday, with fast-flowing water sweeping away motorbikes and pedestrians right on the streets.

Thunderstorms hit around 7 p.m., causing water to rush from side alleys into National Highway 1, flooding a stretch of road about 500 m long to more than half the height of motorbike wheels.

Many vehicles stalled and had to be pushed.

At some intersections, motorbike riders were knocked over and swept away by strong currents. Residents on both sides of the road ran out to help.

"The rain was heavy with thunder and lightning. Many people pulled over onto the sidewalk to wait for the water to recede, but some tried to push through and were swept away," said Tan, a resident of Long Binh Ward.

The Tam Hiep underpass was also partially flooded, making it difficult for vehicles to pass through National Highway 1 and causing long traffic jams.

According to the Dong Nai Meteorological and Hydrological Center, rainfall recorded on Monday reached 23.5 mm, concentrated in the wards of Long Binh, Tam Hiep, Ho Nai, and several communes bordering the urban area.
