Heavy rains from Monday night have inundated several areas in Ha Long City, home to the world's famous Ha Long Bay in northern Vietnam, with water levels as deep as 1.2 m.

The water has invaded people's homes by Tuesday, submerging vehicles and belongings. The flooded areas include Hong Ha, Cao Thang, Ha Tu and Ha Trung wards.

Long-lasting rains also triggered erosion at an embankment in Hong Hai Ward, causing a house to collapse. There were no casualties. Authorities have evacuated families in the eroded areas to cultural houses, as well as barricaded regions and erected warning signs.

Authorities have also dispatched people to clear out blockages at sewers and perform clean-ups.

Despite being situated near the sea, Ha Long still gets flooded occasionally. City authorities said the heavy rains, combined with high tides and rubbles coming down from hills, have blocked the city’s drainage systems.

From 5 a.m. Monday to 5 a.m. Tuesday, rain levels in Ha Long were recorded to be at over 160 mm, according to meteorological agencies. As the rain subsided Tuesday morning, water levels began going down as well.
