Around 1 p.m. on Sunday, heavy rain in Sa Pa led to the sudden collapse of a 20-meter high mountain slope, engulfing a village situated about 50 meters from the mountain's base. Mud cascaded into four stilt houses where 26 people were living.
Nine people managed to escape, but 17 others were buried under mud, rocks, and debris.
In response, Sa Pa authorities mobilized 80 military and police officers to search for the victims. By 3:30 p.m., 6 bodies had been recovered.
Nine injured individuals were taken to Sa Pa General Hospital for emergency treatment, and their conditions are now stable. Four others remain missing.
The landslide was triggered by heavy rainfall influenced by the circulation of typhoon Yagi.
Earlier on Sunday morning, another landslide in northern Hoa Binh province killed 4 people when it buried a house.
