The newspaper rolled out this year's Impact Rankings on Wednesday after evaluating more than 2,150 schools in 125 countries and territories.
This marks the sixth time it has composed this ranking to evaluate universities in implementing the 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) of the United Nations, such as no poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation.
Nguyen Tat Thanh University in Ho Chi Minh City has the highest ranking in Vietnam and is placed in the group of 301-400. This is also the first time this school has appeared in the Impact Rankings.
Three other schools that also broke into the ranking for the first time are HCMC's Van Lang University (in 801-1,000 group), Lac Hong University in HCMC's neighbor province of Dong Nai (1,001-1,500), and Vietnamese–German University (1,501+) in Binh Duong Province, another HCMC's neighbor.
The remaining nine representatives of Vietnam are those that have been listed at least once.
Among them, six schools are in the top 401-600: Vietnam National University in Hanoi, Duy Tan University in Da Nang City, FPT University (headquartered in Hanoi), National Economics University in Hanoi, Ton Duc Thang University in HCMC, and HCMC University of Economics.
The other three schools are Hanoi Polytechnic University (group 601-800), HCMC Open University and Phenikaa University in Hanoi (1,001-1,500).

A university’s total score in a given year is calculated by combining its score in the SDG of "partnerships for the goals" with its best three results on the remaining goals. The "partnerships for the goals" accounts for 22% of the total score, while the other SDGs each carries a weighting of 26%.
This means that different universities are scored based on a different set of SDGs, depending on their focus. The score for the overall ranking is an average of the last two years’ total scores.
