Universities in the U.S. continue to occupy top positions in Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings for 2026, although its number in the top 500 has dropped to a record low.

THE released its 2026 World University Rankings on Oct. 9, reaffirming the dominance of U.S. and U.K. institutions at the pinnacle of global higher education.

Oxford stands at number 1, followed by the U.S.'s Massachusetts Institute of Technology, while Princeton University achieved its highest-ever ranking, climbing to joint third place with the University of Cambridge.

Harvard University fell two places to fifth. The University of Cambridge, Stanford University, and Imperial College London each moved up one spot.

The U.S. has six more universities in the top 20 this year, totaling 35 in the top 100, though this is a decline from 38 last year.

In the top 500, the U.S. still dominates with 102 institutions, but this is the lowest number on record.

Its average score has also dipped, and 25 of its institutions—more than any other country—have fallen to their lowest-ever positions, including the University of Chicago (15th), Columbia University (20th), and Duke University (28th).

In contrast, China saw 21% of its universities rise in the rankings this year, with the country's average score increasing by a full point. China now has five universities in the top 40, up from three last year, and 35 in the top 500, more than Australia. Eighteen Chinese institutions reached their best-ever rankings, more than any other nation.

India has climbed to second place in terms of the number of ranked institutions, trailing only the U.S.

However, Asia's top universities showed signs of stagnation. Elite institutions like Tsinghua University (12th), Peking University (13th) of China, and the National University of Singapore (17th) did not improve their rankings this year, marking a shift from the rapid rise observed in previous years, according to the THE's report.

This year's rankings are based on 18 indicators across five pillars: research quality (30%), teaching (29.5%), research environment (29%), international outlook (7.5%), and industry income and patents (4%).

THE assessed and ranked 2,191 higher education institutions from 115 countries and territories. Vietnam has 11 institutions represented in this year's rankings, up from nine last year. Leading the Vietnamese cohort is the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City, ranked 501–600.

THE is one of the four most influential global university rankings, alongside QS, ARWU, and U.S. News. The organization has released its standalone World University Rankings since 2011.
