Zeng Zichong and Zeng Ziyi, students at Hangzhou's Xuejun High School in Zhejiang Province, had studied side by side since kindergarten. This time, their "god-level synchronicity" did not just make headlines; it earned them spots in the same program at Xi'an Jiaotong University, one of northern China's most prestigious schools.
"At first, we could not believe it. It was not until we checked it several times that we realized we had actually got the same score," the brothers said, the South China Morning Post reported.
The gaokao, widely seen as the toughest university entrance exam in the world, tests students on Chinese, English, math, plus one elective in the sciences and one in the humanities. Scoring 666 is already an achievement, but doing it in perfect sync is a statistical marvel.
With their results, the Zeng brothers both enrolled in the Computer Science and Technology program, specializing in Experimental Technology. "This incredible synchronicity is not only fate but a testament to their strength. We look forward to seeing the brothers chase their dreams side by side and shine even brighter," Xi'an Jiaotong University posted on Weibo on July 25.
According to their family, Zeng Zichong and Zeng Ziyi not only look alike but also share similar personalities, having studied together since kindergarten. Zichong's name means "a bird soaring into the sky," while Ziyi's means "to assist and help." Their parents hoped the brothers would always accompany and support each other.
In middle school, their academic results were nearly identical. Zichong excelled in Chinese literature and English, while Ziyi stood out in math and physics. By regularly exchanging ideas and helping each other, they both achieved high grades.
They also share many hobbies, such as gaming, watching movies and visiting the library. Their shared passion for computer science and artificial intelligence led them to apply for the same major at the same university.
Zichong said he chose the university because of its rich legacy and strong academic reputation, while Ziyi said he was attracted by the ancient cultural charm of the city of Xi'an.
Citing the many paths ahead, the brothers said they hope to stay together: "We hope to study and work in the same city in the future," according to the Zhejiang Daily Press Group.
