Students in need of data expertise for digital economy

Data analytics and data science professionals play a crucial role in business decision-making, but the job market is heating up, and the supply of qualified talent remains limited.

Netflix saves over a billion dollars annually through its recommendation engine, which helps retain users and boost engagement. Around 35% of Amazon's revenue comes from personalized suggestions. Google generates hundreds of billions via targeted advertising powered by user data and predictive analytics.

What all these models share is the ability to translate data into substantial economic value. From tech to finance, e-commerce to manufacturing, data is reshaping how organizations operate, compete, and innovate. Roles such as data analyst, data engineer, and data scientist are no longer behind-the-scenes functions, they are now key players in strategic decision-making.

In Vietnam, demand for data-related positions has surged recently, especially in leading sectors such as banking, technology, and e-commerce. Salaries for these roles typically range from VND20 to 60 million (US$766-2,300) per month, reflecting the fierce competition to attract top talent.

Yet with opportunity comes high expectations. According to academic platform ResearchGate, creating measurable business impact from data requires far more than technical fluency in Python, R, or SQL. It demands systems thinking, business acumen, and a strong foundation in mathematics, technology, and analytics.

That's why short-term courses often fall short. Moving beyond the level of data technician to becoming a data-driven decision-maker requires rigorous, interdisciplinary training rooted in both theory and real-world application.

Cultivating capability for the data economy

In the field of data science and business analytics, the key challenge lies not in technology but in education. To produce professionals who truly understand how to use data within a business context, academic programs must meet global standards while remaining relevant to local markets.

In Vietnam, the British University Vietnam (BUV) is one of the few institutions offering a fully-fledged undergraduate degree in this area. Students earn a degree from the University of London, one of the world's leading university systems, under academic guidance from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).

The program combines the strength of British academia with hands-on business experience. Over the course of three years, students study core subjects such as statistics, programming, mathematical modeling, and big data processing, while also engaging in simulation projects, case studies, and real-world problem-solving in the Financial Training Lab.

Each semester, students tackle authentic business problems, such as optimizing operations, analyzing consumer behavior, or forecasting product demand. They must draw on diverse data sources, build analytical models, and present insights as if advising actual clients. This process not only deepens their technical understanding but also sharpens their ability to communicate through data, an essential skill for transitioning from analyst to strategist.

BUV also maintains strong partnerships with major corporations such as Deloitte, FPT Software, HSBC, and Shopee. Through workshops, company visits, and early internship opportunities, students engage with real industry environments from year one. These experiences significantly narrow the gap between academic learning and market expectations, something that often overwhelms fresh graduates entering the workforce.

Armed with a robust interdisciplinary foundation, blending technology, mathematics, and business thinking, graduates of BUV are well-positioned to join global firms, launch their own ventures in the data space, or pursue further studies at world-renowned universities.
