Ho Chi Minh City is set to introduce English as a second language in select schools as part of a new pilot program, according to its Department of Education and Training.

Nguyen Van Hieu, the director of the department, said Friday that foreign languages, particularly English, are essential tools for students to navigate life effectively.

Meanwhile, English would no longer be a compulsory subject in the high school graduation examination starting in 2025.

Earlier Deputy Minister of Education and Training Pham Ngoc Thuong referred to a Politburo resolution that calls for gradually making English a second language in schools.

He commended HCMC for its decade-long trial of teaching subjects like math and science in English, and urged it to continue its collaboration with his ministry to become among the first localities to adopt English as a second language in schools.

The department has been tasked with developing criteria for this transition, including the appropriate duration of study.
