Nord Anglia Education schools, British International School (BIS) Hanoi, and British Vietnamese International School (BVIS) Hanoi are preparing students for an AI-enhanced world through a video series addressing common questions about AI.

The rapid advancement of AI is transforming various aspects of daily life. Teachers, students, and parents commonly encounter AI through tools like chatbots and assistants such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot. These tools enable users to ask questions, generate text or images, and even write code through written prompts.

Nord Anglia Education (NAE) schools, including BIS Hanoi and BVIS Hanoi, are exploring how AI tools can enhance education, empowering the entire school community to effectively utilize AI capabilities.

AI's role in education

AI is an emerging technology, and its role in education is still evolving. According to experts, school communities like BIS and BVIS Hanoi have an opportunity to experiment with AI and determine how it can best support teaching and learning.

At BVIS Hanoi, AI is already being used to simplify complex language, making challenging texts more accessible for students of different ages and backgrounds.

"We found that AI is a great way to make lessons more engaging and exciting," says Orlando Callaghan, a Year 4 Teacher at BVIS Hanoi. "It makes lessons more inclusive and accessible, particularly in an international and bilingual community."

How to unleash AI in the classroom

Effectively integrating AI into the classroom requires ensuring that students use it to complement their learning rather than bypass it.

"If students use AI to bypass learning opportunities, it isn't going to serve them best for the future," explains Stephanie Miller, Deputy Head of Secondary at BIS Hanoi. "We need students to engage with challenging concepts and use AI as a tool to test their understanding and analyze information."

AI can assist with simpler tasks, such as creating revision plans or generating practice questions, enabling students to dedicate more time to deeper learning and critical thinking.

Nord Anglia applying AI in education

Nord Anglia Education has collaborated with experts from University College London and other institutions to consider the ethical implications of AI and explore its applications in classrooms. The focus is on how AI can make teaching and learning more efficient.

"We’re exploring AI applications that allow teachers to spend more time with students by reducing the time spent on routine tasks," shares Dr. Elise Ecoff, Chief Education Officer at NAE. "It’s about continuous growth and learning for everyone, including our teachers and students."

Best way to use AI in education

Experts at BIS Hanoi caution against treating AI like a search engine. Instead, they recommend interacting with AI conversationally to fully utilize its capabilities.

"If you're a parent helping your child with homework, AI can be a useful tool to learn about the subject," explains Patrick Flynn, Computer Science Teacher and Ed Tech Coach at BIS Hanoi. Practical uses include summarizing topics, generating questions to test knowledge, or providing feedback on written work.

Use AI safely at home

The BIS and BVIS Hanoi community is encouraged to approach AI tools critically, as they do not always provide accurate information. Students should verify AI-generated information by cross-referencing sources, such as textbooks or reliable online resources.

"It’s unclear how user data is used to train AI models," notes Emma Goldie, Head of Business Studies, Economics, and Computer Science at BVIS Hanoi. "Personal information, such as addresses or names, could potentially be stored in AI databases."

The new video series, which can be found on BIS Hanoi’s official YouTube channel, aims to guide students, parents, and teachers on safely and effectively using AI tools while maximizing their potential in education.
