A 9-year-old girl in Paris has stunned the French education system by becoming the youngest ever to pass the country's prestigious baccalaureate exam, a diploma usually earned at 17 or 18.

The student, who sat the test as an independent candidate in Mathematics and Physics-Chemistry, has set a new record previously held by Arthur Ramiandrisoa, who passed at 11 years and 11 months in 1989.

According to France's Ministry of Education, the girl was born in France, holds Grenadian nationality, and currently studies in Dubai. At her age, she would normally be in CM1, the equivalent of 4th grade, Franceinfo reported.

Her success was supported by Isoset, an education group that applies the Aleph accelerated learning method, which has helped other students pass the baccalaureate as early as 12.

The achievement has sparked admiration but also debate. Some educators worry that such intense acceleration could harm a child's psychological development.

This year, France’s baccalaureate pass rate reached 91.8% among more than 720,000 candidates, according to the ministry.
