The FOBISIA Primary Mathematics Competition 2025, hosted by the British International School (BIS) Hanoi, brought together 120 students from 16 schools across seven countries.

The event on March 14–15 provided a platform for young learners to engage in mathematics through a collaborative and supportive environment.

Since joining the Federation of British International Schools in Asia (FOBISIA) in 2015, BIS Hanoi has actively participated in a range of FOBISIA initiatives. The organization now includes more than 100 international schools across Asia, working together to exchange educational practices and create meaningful learning experiences for students.

FOBISIA holds over 70 student events each year, spanning sports, academics, and the arts. The Primary Mathematics Competition, which began in 2010, has become a key event in the academic calendar.

This year's competition challenged students to apply their numerical fluency, logical reasoning, and problem-solving abilities through a variety of team-based activities. Participants were grouped into teams of four and engaged in tasks designed to promote critical thinking and cooperation.

One task involved building a stable structure from paper cups, encouraging teams to think creatively while testing their understanding of balance and design. Students worked together under time constraints, showcasing their problem-solving skills and team dynamics.

In another interactive challenge, students designed and raced balloon-powered cars, applying both mathematical knowledge and engineering principles. The activity generated considerable excitement, allowing students to demonstrate their innovation and hands-on learning abilities.

Hyewon, a Year 6 student from BIS Hanoi, described feeling both nervous and excited during her first international mathematics competition. She welcomed the opportunity to challenge herself and build confidence. Fellow student Minchan added, "I'm excited to be a part of the FOBISIA Maths Competition. It's an amazing event where I can meet with my fellow mathematicians."

Alongside the group activities, students competed in a rigorous individual round that tested their precision, logic, and perseverance. BIS Hanoi students performed strongly, earning multiple awards: Cheng Hsun received a bronze medal, Chaeha earned silver, and Minchan was awarded gold while achieving the second-highest individual score in the competition.

Charlotte Beasant, Primary Maths Leader at BIS Hanoi and organizer of the event, noted that the competition emphasized learning, cooperation, and a shared appreciation for mathematics.

"This competition is about much more than winning," she said. "It's about collaboration, building friendships, and celebrating the joy of learning. The skills developed here will benefit these students well into the future."
