A car driver under the influence hit a high school student and killed her on Monday in the southern Phu Quoc Island.

The car carrying four people was running from An Thoi to Duong Dong wards at around 9 p.m. on Monday when it crashed a motorbike, injuring a 42-year-old man.

After the collision, the car drove for another 400 m and hit a group of pedestrians, killing a 15-year-old girl. The car continued to ram onto the sidewalks, hit several trash bins and only stopped when locals blocked it.

The driver had mild injuries and was taken to a local medical station. However, he escaped afterwards.

Phu Quoc police said that about two hours after the accident happened, a man showed up to the police station. He said he was Danh Thep, 29, and that he was the driver involved in the accident. He did not have a driving license and had an alcohol level at 0.35 mg/l of breath. The car was borrowed from an acquaintance 10 days prior for practice purposes, he said.

Police then verified that the car involved in the accident belonged to the Kien Giang Sponsoring Association for Poor Patients, before it was liquidated to a retired official.
