Da Nang City has sought permission to build an extra domestic terminal and extend several other parts of the nation's third largest airport.

In a proposal sent recently to the Ministry of Transport, the city says it wants to raise capacity of the Da Nang International Airport to 25 million passengers by 2030, and 30 million by 2050.

To achieve the target, the airport needs to have its runway extended by 142 meters to 3,190 m and expand its parking lot as well as existing domestic terminal.

The proposal also seeks to build a third terminal (T3) with a capacity of 15 million passengers per year after 2030.

The city estimates the entire expansion project to cost VND31 trillion ($1.25 billion).

The Da Nang airport is Vietnam’s third largest after Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat and Hanoi’s Noi Bai.

It is spread over 85 hectares and designed to serve four million passengers on international flights and six million on domestic flights per year. In the pre-pandemic year of 2019, it received as many as 15.5 million passengers.
