Standing Deputy Secretary of Da Nang Party Committee Nguyen Van Quang was elected as the city’s Party leader for the 2020-2025 term on Thursday morning.

The result was announced at the city’s 22nd three-day Party Congress, which wrapped up Thursday.

Two new deputy secretaries were elected at the congress: Luong Nguyen Minh Triet, Hai Chau District Party secretary, and Le Trung Chinh, vice city chairman.

Quang, 51, has served as the standing deputy secretary of Da Nang Party Committee since December 2019.

A native of northern port city Hai Phong, and holding a PhD in law, he served as head of Hai Phong's People's Procuracy, the municipal prosecution agency, from 2012 before being promoted to be head of the high-level People's Procuracy in HCMC in 2015.

In September 2018, he was appointed deputy head of the Supreme People's Procuracy and then secretary of the Party Committee of the Supreme People's Procuracy during the 2015-2020 tenure.

Quang's predecessor, former transport minister Truong Quang Nghia had served as the city's Party chief since 2017.

During the 2016-2019 period, Da Nang recorded an annual gross regional domestic product (GRDP) growth rate of 7.5 percent, with its GRDP per capita last year reaching $4,095.

Da Nang, a city of around 1.1 million, has pursued smart city status for several years.

Central Vietnam's urban hub, and considered the country's third most important city after Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh, Da Nang, a popular tourism hotpot, has set the target of an annual gross regional domestic product (GRDP) growth rate of 9-10 percent over the next five years and a GRDP per capita of 5,000-5,500 by 2025.
