A woman in northern Lai Chau Province has been captured after 10 years managing to escape imprisonment from a murder sentence for poisoning her husband.

Thao Thi Chia, 30, was detained by the police on Thursday for the murder she committed in 2011.

After listening to advice from a stranger that marrying a Chinese husband would bring her wealth and happiness, she plotted the murder of her husband Vang Long Pao.

Chia sought out heartbreak glass, a poisonous plant native to the region, used it to concoct a drink and made her husband drink it.

It proved fatal as she had hoped.

Chia was soon apprehended and sentenced to eight years in jail for murder by the Lai Chau People's Court in 2014.

But since she had a young child at the time her sentence was deferred.

One day Chia disappeared.

The police caught up with her three years later, but she was again raising a young child, and the sentence was again postponed.

Chia escaped again, this time to China, changing her name and date of birth, and ended up marrying a man in Yunnan Province.

After 10 years the police figured out where she was hiding.

On June 28 they cooperated with the Chinese police to capture Chia so that she could finally serve her sentence.
