A 33-year-old man accused of killing a couple and their 11-year-old granddaughter in southern Vietnam told police he was following a game mission, but investigators say evidence points to robbery.

Dong Nai police said they captured Le Sy Tung on Oct. 5 after surrounding his hideout in Phuoc Long Ward. Officers seized gun parts, a silencer, smoke grenades, black tape and a scope.

Tung, described by investigators as heavily addicted to gaming, allegedly confessed to shooting dead 48-year-old agricultural trader Do Duy Thien, his wife and their granddaughter at the family's business in Dak Nhau Commune.

Police said Tung even used a cloth bag to catch bullet casings so they would not drop to the ground, an attempt to hinder forensic work. He initially told investigators he was "completing a game mission assigned to players."

But the crime scene suggested robbery: furniture had been overturned, and the family's safe was dragged outside and smashed open.

The murders were discovered early on Oct. 3, when neighbors found Thien and his granddaughter dead on the porch beside a meal tray, and his wife near the family car. Autopsies confirmed all three victims were shot in the head.

Deputy Minister of Public Security Nguyen Van Long personally directed the investigation due to the brutal nature of the case.

Thien's home sits on a hillside along an old inter-district road, in an area with no streetlights and few neighbors. Locals described the victims as kind and well-off. Their two children, who usually lived with them, were not at home on the night of the murders.
