Two women kidnapped a 7-year-old girl in southern Vietnam in broad daylight to pressure her mother into paying off a debt, and the disturbing act was caught on security camera.

Police in Tay Ninh Province arrested 54-year-old Nguyen Thi Huynh Lan and 58-year-old Nguyen Thi Hoa on Wednesday after they allegedly abducted the child a day earlier, in what authorities say was a calculated plan to force her mother to pay back VND30 million (US$1,155).

Lan claimed she was owed the money from a business deal but had been unable to recover the debt. On May 20, she and Hoa went to the debtor's home, but when they could not find the woman, they saw her 7-year-old daughter instead and decided to kidnap her.

Security footage showed Hoa luring the girl onto her motorbike by promising to buy her milk tea. Believing the women to be her mother's friends, the child went with them willingly.

The suspects then traveled toward neighboring Long An Province and contacted the girl's mother, demanding she come to Vinh Long to settle the debt in exchange for her daughter's release.

Tay Ninh police worked quickly to trace the suspects and successfully apprehended them in Long An before any harm came to the child.

The case is under further investigation.
