Authorities arrested 15 individuals at Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi in connection with a phone scam that defrauded a woman of VND227 million ($8,900).

The suspects, aged between 17 and 40, were apprehended after arriving from Cambodia, where the scam group was operating, police said Tuesday.

The police launched an investigation into the group after receiving a report from a woman in Quang Binh Province in central Vietnam two months ago. The woman reported being tricked into participating in "review missions" and subsequently losing money.

Investigations revealed that the scam group operated from Cambodia and was led by Chinese nationals. The group comprises members from various countries, including China, Japan, South Korea and Vietnam.

Authorities stated that Chinese managers directed members to target individuals from their own countries. The group was organized into divisions responsible for different tasks, such as contacting potential victims and persuading them to send money.

According to police, the scammers offered victims jobs to rate locations on Google Maps with five stars. The victims were then redirected to Zalo accounts, which provided instructions to download applications and complete tasks. When victims attempted to withdraw their funds, the scammers provided reasons preventing the withdrawal.
