A 31-year-old Hong Kong woman has been rescued from a call center gang in Myanmar late last week, according to Thai authorities.

The Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) had earlier reported that 12 Hong Kong citizens were being forced to work in Chinese-run call centers and gambling websites based in Myanmar, The Straits Times reported.

The ONCB said the group was trying to cross into Thailand from an area near Myanmar’s Myawaddy Town, a known hub for call center gangs and online gambling operations. Acting on this information, Thai authorities worked with local forces to rescue three people, including the Hong Kong woman, who was brought to Thailand on Sunday. She is expected to return to Hong Kong soon.

Thai and Chinese authorities have since cooperated to crack down on the call center gangs involving Thai and Chinese nationals, ThaiRath reported.
