A souvenir shop owner in Hanoi’s Old Quarter has reported being robbed of cash worth VND50 million (US$2,000) in total by three foreign individuals whom he claims used "hypnosis" during the process.

Nguyen Tung Anh, the owner of the shop on Hang Bong Street in Hoan Kiem District, told police that two women and one man—believed to be tourists—came on Wednesday under the pretense of buying gifts.

Shortly after the group arrived, Anh said, he felt as if he had entered a "dream-like" state in which he complied with their instructions without resistance.

"I just kept taking money out of the bag and handing it to them," he said, describing his actions as involuntary.

Anh added that while part of him recognized the behavior as strange, he was unable to stop himself. He recalled watching the group open his bag, remove the cash, and even place the bag back on him before leaving the store.

About ten minutes later, Anh said he regained full awareness and realized what had happened. Upon checking his bag, he found that a total of VND50 million had been taken.

Security footage from the shop captured the entire incident. In the video, the group is seen interacting with Anh and searching through his bag, while he appears passive and does not intervene.

Local police are investigating the case.
