Da Nang police on Tuesday opened a criminal investigation against seven individuals, including managers and employees of the clinic at 180 Tran Phu Street, Hai Chau Ward, for "deceiving customers." Four suspects have been arrested, while three remain under house arrest.
Operating under the Da Nang International General Hospital Joint Stock Company, the clinic advertised treatments for gynecological, urological, sexually transmitted diseases, and abortions.
The facility secretly employed numerous fake doctors who lacked medical qualifications or licenses. Some of these fake practitioners had not even completed high school yet conducted examinations and prescribed treatments, police found.
To avoid detection by health authorities, the clinic had built a hidden passage leading to the basement, where unlicensed individuals could hide during inspections, while licensed doctors were brought in temporarily to pose as legitimate medical providers.
Investigators found the clinic regularly exaggerated or fabricated medical conditions and inflated treatment costs. Patients would be initially quoted fees ranging from VND199,000 to 1 million (US$8–40) but later faced bills between VND10 million to 50 million after minor procedures.
Clinic staff reportedly used painful procedures and threats of serious health complications to pressure patients into accepting costly treatment packages.
So far, authorities have identified at least 17 victims and estimate illicit profits of nearly VND376 million ($14,800).
Da Nang police are urging anyone victimized by the Da Nang International General Clinic to report their cases to Team 4 – Office of the Criminal Investigation Police, located at 47 Ly Tu Trong Street, Hai Chau Ward, Da Nang City.
