A state-owned company in the central Quang Ngai Province has suspended an employee for three months after police arrested him for assaulting a 14-year-old boy on the street.

Quach Pham Cuong, director of the Quang Ngai Power Company, said Wednesday that the decision to suspend Phan Thuong My, 44, was made after the police detained him for three months for "intentionally causing injuries," media reports said.

My's son, a ninth grader, lost a calculator earlier this month and accused a classmate identified only as K. of stealing it.

The boys are students at the La Ha Town Secondary School in Tu Nghia District.

The next day another student returned the calculator to My's son, and K. then demanded an apology for the false accusation, which led to arguments between them.

My became aware of it, and at around noon on Dec. 8 he followed K., who was on a bike, after school on his motorcycle, drove alongside him and started to yell at him.

In scenes captured on a security camera, he then stopped the boy in the middle of the empty street and hit him repeatedly on his face, chest and head.

He left the injured boy on the street, and passers-by rushed him to the Tu Nghia District medical center as he threw up and bled from his nose.

He was then transferred to the Quang Ngai General Hospital, where he was diagnosed with an intracranial lesion.

My has been working for the company’s Tu Nghia District office for 10 years.

He told the police that K. had used "inappropriate language" when he confronted him, which caused him to lose control.

Cuong said the firm would follow the investigation to take further action against My if required.

Pham Thuong My stops a 14-year-old boy on the street in Quang Ngai Province and assaults him on Dec. 8, 2023 as seen in security camera footage.
