In a statement last Saturday, the Chinese Embassy in Thailand cautioned Chinese citizens against falling for offers such as "high-paying jobs" or "free air tickets and accommodation," which are often used to lure victims. The embassy urged travelers to remain vigilant to avoid being deceived, according to CGTN, the English-language news channel of state-run China Global Television Network.
The Chinese Embassy and consulates in Myanmar also advised citizens to stay alert against telecom and online fraud. They emphasized the importance of recognizing scams and avoiding "high-paying overseas job offers," which could lead to dangerous situations, including telecom fraud and risks to personal safety and property.
The warning was issued in a Friday statement on the embassy's official WeChat account, as reported by the Global Times.
The embassy also confirmed that Wang Xing, a Chinese actor who had gone missing, returned to China from Thailand last Friday night following joint efforts between the two countries.
Wang disappeared near the Thai-Myanmar border on Jan. 3 after being duped by human traffickers posing as film producers.
They had promised him a salary three times the market rate. He was subsequently forcibly taken across a river into Myanmar, where he was coerced into learning scamming techniques.
Thai and Myanmar authorities rescued Wang on Jan. 7 through a coordinated operation. Thai police identified him as a victim of human trafficking.
The incident has sparked widespread concern on social media, with users sharing similar cases of friends and relatives disappearing near the Myanmar border after being deceived into traveling to Thailand.
Wang's ordeal has also led some Chinese tourists to reconsider their plans to visit Thailand for the upcoming Lunar New Year.
