A British man has been jailed for 14 months for stealing a perfume bottle worth VND5.1 million (US$196) from a duty-free shop at Ho Chi Minh City's Tan Son Nhat airport.

The trial at the HCMC People’s Court last week heard that Ryan James George, 31, arrived in Vietnam on May 6, 2024, and on the morning of May 17 went to the airport to catch a flight to Phuket, Thailand.

He visited the duty-free shop of which name is not made public, and, while the staff left him briefly to assist another customer, stole a 100 ml bottle of perfume, put it in his bag and fled, Cong Ly newspaper reported.

The staff member noticed the missing bottle and chased after him.

At the boarding gate, when the staff confronted him and asked to check his belongings, he took out the stolen bottle and handed it to them, according to Thanh Nien.

They reported to airport security, who handed the case over to the Tan Binh District police.

During both questioning and trial he admitted to the crime.
