A 20-year-old man was arrested Saturday in southern Binh Duong Province for allegedly stabbing a ride-hailing app driver in order to steal his SH motorbike.

The suspect, identified as Dao Phuoc Phap, is under investigation for robbery. Preliminary findings indicate that Phap, who was deeply in debt, decided to commit robbery to obtain money.

Late on Thursday night, he booked a motorbike ride through a ride-hailing application from Tan Phu District in Ho Chi Minh City to Binh Duong Province. Approximately 20 kilometers into the trip, at a deserted location, Phap allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed the 41-year-old driver multiple times in the back and abdomen.

The victim collapsed, and Phap took his phone and the SH motorbike before fleeing back to his rented room. Bystanders later found the driver with serious injuries and rushed him to hospital.

SH is a high-end motorbike and a new one is priced around VND100 million (US$4,000) in Vietnam.

Police arrested Phap after a day-long search and confiscated relevant evidence.
