HCMC, the epicenter of the latest wave by some distance, continued to lead the daily tally with 3,898 cases, followed by Binh Duong (3,210), Long An (724), and Dong Nai (614).
Hanoi recorded 114 new cases in the day and Da Nang 130.
Sunday's tally is the highest daily number ever recorded in Vietnam, followed by 9,225 on July 24.
Of the new cases, 2,155 were detected in the community and the rest in quarantine facilities or lockdown areas.
With the recovery of 4,860 patients confirmed Sunday, the total number of recoveries since the start of the pandemic rose to 71,497.
HCMC also led Sunday’s death toll with 108 of 381 deaths in seven localities. It was followed by Binh Duong with 30, Long An with five and Ca Mau, Dak Lak, Binh Dinh and Ninh Thuan with one each. The total Covid-19 death toll stands at 3,397, including 3,362 in the new wave.
The number of local cases recorded since the new wave started in late April has gone up to 206,439.
Over 8.8 million people have received at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine; and at least 888,000 have received both doses.
Hanoi extended its social distancing order for another two weeks until August 22 after new clusters were found in the capital city.
The country on Sunday started to distribute Covid medicine remdesivir to several resuscitation hospitals in HCMC, after approving the use of the medicine in Covid treatment on Friday.
