A worker fell to his death at a facility under construction at the Hong Kong International Airport on Thursday, authorities said.

The 37-year-old man reportedly lost his footing on the sixth floor of the T2 Concourse, a new passenger concourse built as part of the third runway expansion at the airport, falling to the fourth floor below.

Witnesses at the scene quickly called for help, and the worker was rushed to North Lantau Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, the South China Morning Post reported.

In response to the incident, airport authorities suspended all construction work involving heights at the terminal. An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fatal accident, the Dimsum Daily reported.

Hong Kong International Airport's three-runway system is set to be completed and commissioned by the end of 2024, according to the Airport Authority Hong Kong.

The third runway was commissioned in Nov-2022, and related works include reconfiguration of the center runway, terminal 2 expansion, and the development of the T2 Concourse.

Hong Kong airport served 40 million passengers in 2023 and the new system is expected to help increase its annual capacity to 120 million passengers.
