Ho Chi Minh City police have arrested a 22-year-old woman for recruiting 1,500 others, mostly college students, to work as sex workers.

Vu Nguyen Nhat Vy, currently a college student, is under investigation for "brokering sex services."

Her arrest came after the Criminal Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security cooperated with HCMC police to conduct a raid at several hotels around District 1 on Friday and found many men and women having sex.

Later, Vy admitted to have connected those couples.

Investigators said last November, Vy created several accounts on Zalo, a Vietnamese texting and calling app, and Telegram, aside from setting up a number of private groups on Facebook to recruit women for her "sugar baby" ring.

"The ring has around 1,500 members and operates not just in HCMC but its neighboring provinces of Binh Duong and Dong Nai, as well as Hanoi," police said.

Vy charged her clients, mostly middle-aged men, VND3-25 million ($130-1,100) each time, VND6-50 million for overnight services, VND10-25 million per day for a "sex tour" and VND15-50 million for six-eight services per month.

For a fee of VND1 million, her clients are allowed to choose a woman.

Police said Vy had pocketed at least VND200 million so far from running the ring and that she had spent the sum on a number of luxury services and products.
