Chinese Communist Party General Secretary and President Xi Jinping has congratulated Vietnam's Party Chief Nguyen Phu Trong on his re-election as General Secretary of the 13th Communist Party Central Committee.

Xi said in his message on Sunday that he was glad to hear that Trong has been re-elected to the Vietnam Communist Party’s top post and would like to extend warm congratulations, and through him, to the new Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) leadership, both personally and on behalf of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.

The People's Daily, the official newspaper of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, also reported Xi as noting that the CPV, under the strong leadership of the 12th Party Central Committee headed by Trong, has gained achievements in the cause of socialist construction and reform.

The successful convention of the 13th National Party Congress has started a new journey in Vietnam's socialist modernization, Xi said.

He expressed his belief that under the leadership of the new CPV Central Committee headed by Trong, new greater achievements will be made in various fields.

"China and Vietnam are friendly socialist neighbors and also a community with a shared future of strategic significance," Xi said.

The Chinese leader also said that he attaches great importance to relations between the two parties and the two countries, and stands ready to work with Trong to enhance strategic communication, promote traditional friendship, and deepen exchanges and cooperation in various fields, aiming to deliver more benefits to the people of both countries and contributing to promoting regional and global peace, development and win-win cooperation.

Trong, 77, was re-elected for another five-year term, the third in a row "with almost absolute votes" during the first plenum of the 13th Party Central Committee Sunday morning.

Trong, who is older than the age requirements, was among the "special cases" introduced by the 12th Party Central Committee for re-election to the 13th Party Central Committee. He became General Secretary of the Party Central Committee in 2011, and was re-elected to the position in 2016. He was elected president in October 2018, simultaneously heading the Party and executive branches of the governance, following the death of President Tran Dai Quang due to serious illness.
