An elderly woman was killed and three injured in Hanoi Saturday after a car hit pedestrians and other vehicles.

Eyewitnesses said a car driving on Ngoc Khanh Street, Ba Dinh District moved into the opposite lane and hit two pedestrians, two bicyclists and two motorbikes before colliding with another car.

They said the car showed no signs of slowing down after hitting the two pedestrians first.

"When the car stopped, we asked the driver to come out and saw that that person wasn’t entirely alert," said one unnamed eyewitness.

No further information about the accident was available, with the police only saying they are investigating it, including the possibility of the driver being under the influence of some illegal substance.

Road crashes are a leading cause of deaths in Vietnam, killing almost one person every hour, according to the National Traffic Safety Committee. The country targets reducing road accident deaths to below 20 a day, or 7,300 a year.
