Car driver on phone when he fatally hit cyclist, arrested

Nguyen Van Khai, 25, of the northern Phu Tho Province, who faces charges of "violating road traffic laws," was driving on National Highway 1 in Ha Tinh's Cam Xuyen District just before 10:00 p.m on December 13 when he slammed into a cycle ridden by Nguyen Huu Vi, 48.

The local man was knocked off the bicycle and killed on the spot.

Khai fled the scene, but the police caught up with him after a nine-day search.

He admitted he had been on his phone while driving and caused the accident.
