A Canadian man has been prevented from leaving Vietnam as an investigation into a road accident is ongoing, although he wishes to do so to receive medical treatment at home.

The man, who was the victim in the accident that took place near Nha Trang Town of central Khanh Hoa Province, wants to return to Canada to treat his injuries.

Gélinas Guy has submitted a petition to the Immigration Department and the police in Khanh Hoa asking that he is allowed to leave Vietnam, his representative said Tuesday.

According to the petition, Guy was riding his motorbike carrying his wife and their 7-year-old daughter on Vo Nguyen Giap Street heading toward Nha Trang when they were hit by a car in early March. The crash killed his wife and left him with serious leg injuries. His daughter was only slightly injured.

An investigation found that the driver of the car, Ngo Duy Binh, a banker, left the scene of the accident after the crash. He was only summoned by the police days later.

Khanh Hoa Police later issued a decision to prevent Guy and his daughter from leaving Vietnam while the investigation is still ongoing.

Guy said he wants to leave in Vietnam as his daughter’s Vietnam visa has expired and he will be in a better situation to treat his injuries in Canada.

He said he has given his statements regarding the accident, and authorized a person in Vietnam to continue working with the police on the case.

A representative of Khanh Hoa Police said they have received Guy’s petition and that it is under consideration.
