The 1.5-km, six-lane bridge links downtown and the Thu Thiem New Urban Area, designated as the new financial and innovative hub of the city.
All vehicles except container trucks are allowed on it from 3 p.m. Thursday.
Constructed under the build-operate format, it cost VND3.1 trillion ($134.54 million), making it easily the most expensive of the city's numerous bridges.

HCMC has approved plans for a total of four bridges, besides the existing tunnel under the river, to connect the downtown area with Thu Thiem.
Thu Thiem 1 Bridge was completed in 2008 and the Thu Thiem Tunnel in 2011.
Thu Thiem 3 and 4 bridges will link Districts 4 and 7 and be built before 2030.
