A teenage boy in the central province of Quang Nam on Thursday accidentally received two Pfizer vaccine shots 10 minutes apart.

The 11th grader of Tran Cao Van High School in Tam Ky Town received one Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine shot at a table, then moved to another and got jabbed a second time, according to a school representative.

The student was supposed to stay back at the vaccination site, organized by the Tam Ky medical center, for 30 minutes after receiving the first shot, before receiving the second four weeks later. However, when the student moved from one table to the next, health workers thought he had not been vaccinated and jabbed him a second time.

Following the incident, the student was taken to the medical center to be monitored. His health remained stable until Friday, and he is expected to be discharged in the afternoon, according to a representative of the medical center.

Pham Thanh Binh, director of the Tam Ky medical center, said the accident happened due to the mistakes of the personnel at the second table, who did not take notice of the vaccination list and certificate. The homeroom teacher in charge had also let students roam free as there were too many at the time, he added.

Quang Nam has vaccinated over 140,000 students aged 12-17 so far.
