Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh wants construction of Terminal 3 at the Tan Son Nhat International Airport to begin this quarter and be completed in 2024.

"The T3 terminal needs to be completed by September 2024 at the earliest. Work should be done day and night," he said during a visit to the airport Saturday.

The T3 was approved two years ago with an investment of VND11 trillion by the Airports Corporation of Vietnam.

Work on the upgrade, which would double the airport’s capacity to 50 million passengers a year, was to begin last year, but land clearance issues prevented that from happening.

PM Chinh also ordered HCMC authorities to quickly complete approved road expansion projects around the airport to resolve traffic congestion.

He said 12 concrete blocks at the airport that used to protect fighter jets during wartime should be removed to increase space for widebody aircraft.

Tan Son Nhat was designed to serve 25 million passengers per year by 2020, but it has been serving nearly 40 million since 2017.
