Authorities find fishing boats smuggling in 177,000 liters of diesel

The Coast Guard and border guards have caught three fishing vessels trying to smuggle in 177,000 liters of diesel in southern Vietnam.

A patrol boat belonging to the Coast Guard Regional Command No.4, which monitors Vietnam’s southwestern waters, spotted a suspicious-looking vessel off Phu Quoc Island late Wednesday night.

It stopped the fishing boat to check and found 45,000 liters of diesel aboard. Its skipper, Huynh Chi Thanh, 62, could not provide documents for its legal provenance.

A few days earlier the Coast Guard had found another fishing boat in the same area with 22,000 liters of contraband diesel.

Also on Wednesday border guards in Ba Ria – Vung Tau, a coastal province bordering Ho Chi Minh City, found a fishing boat with 110,000 liters of smuggled diesel.

This year the Coast Guard Regional Command No.4 has seized 1.8 million liters of contraband diesel and sold it to realize more than VND36 billion ($1.44 million) for the government’s coffers, and fined the smugglers VND2 billion.

Border guards in Ba Ria – Vung Tau have busted 11 smuggling attempts and seized more than 815,000 liters of diesel.
