Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese washed down a Vietnamese sandwich with an ice-cold local beer in Hanoi during his two-day official visit to the country on Saturday.

"Sam Tran took me to a local spot in Hanoi today to try a couple of Vietnamese classics," Albanese wrote on his official Twitter account, mentioning Sam Tran, a Vietnamese chef with multiple years of working experience in Australia.

Albanese bought banh mi (Vietnamese baguette) at a local food stall before visiting a bia hoi (larger) shop on Duong Thanh Street in Hoan Kiem District. During his 40-minute lunch break, he enjoyed peanuts, roasted pork, fish cakes and tofu.

He said 99% of the beer in Vietnam is made with Australian barley, and many baguettes are made with Australia's wheat as well.

Albanese visited the Vietnamese capital after attending the Shangri-La Dialogue 2023 in Singapore. He will be in Vietnam until Sunday, meeting with high-ranking leaders to bolster commerce, investment and education, as well as to discuss expanding cooperation regarding climate, energy and the environment.

This is Albanese's first visit to Vietnam since he assumed the position of prime minister in May 2022. The visit occurred as Vietnam and Australia commemorate the 50th anniversary of their establishment of diplomatic relations in 1973.

The two countries upgraded their relationship to a strategic partnership in March 2018. Economic and commercial cooperation is considered a highlight in the relationship.

Australia has also deployed the Aus4Skills program, with which over $141 million has been spent to support Vietnam in education and training.
