An American man died in a road crash in HCMC on Sunday morning after his motorbike was hit by a truck in District 12.

At around 6:30 a.m. the victim, whose name has not been revealed, was driving on Le Van Khuong Street when a truck ran head-on into his vehicle, the National Traffic Safety Committee said.

The man, thought to be in his 40s, was killed almost instantly and traffic on the street was blocked for several hours.

His family in Vietnam has received his body.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident. They have not mentioned if they would hold the truck driver for the process.

Road crashes are a leading cause of death in Vietnam, killing almost one person every hour. There were more than 17,000 accidents in 2019, which claimed 7,624 lives, a 7.1 percent decrease from a year earlier, according to official data.

Traffic in HCMC has been worse in recent days as it usually happens during the run-up to the country's biggest festival, the Lunar New Year.
