A drunk driver in Hanoi injured eight people by driving his car into six motorbikes in Thanh Tri District on Friday.

A witness said that at around 4 p.m. Friday, a Toyota Vios speeding in the wrong lane through Ngoc Hoi Commune hit four motorbikes – launching the vehicles into the air – and collided with two others. The car only stopped when it hit a barricade running along the road.

Eight people involved in the incident have been taken to the hospital. Their injury status is unconfirmed.

After the accident, Tran Minh Duc, 36, the car's driver, exited the car in a delirious state. Hanoi police said a breathalyzer test revealed that Duc had 0.404 mg of alcohol per liter of breath at the time.

An investigation is ongoing.

Anyone driving with alcohol present in their body would face either fines or criminal charges in accordance with Vietnamese law.

An alcohol level above 0.4 mg per liter of breath while driving should result in a fine of up to VND8 million ($341.15) and the driver’s license should be revoked for up to 24 months, according to Vietnamese regulations.

On Friday, the first day of the Tet holiday, around 25 traffic accidents were recorded across the country, resulting in 14 deaths and 15 injuries, according to traffic police.

Around 1,400 drivers were fined for drunk driving in the 24-hour-period.
